My friend is trying to widen his waist cos he recons he has to buy big jeans to accommodate his big legs.
I was thinking of recommending he do squats and lunges to help grow his glutes.

Pop a squat or what? :-)
That might help. He could also do side plank leg lifts, cable abduction, lying abduction, and ball squeezes.
